About

The Institute of Light is Hackney’s newest collaborative space – a one-stop cultural hub set in an enigmatic railway arch and intimate courtyard under the rumble of the old “Great Eastern Jazz Line” IOL works as a multi-sensory space; a repertory cinema; vinyl record store; film, music and photography bookshop, and social cafe – all under one roof and programmed around an exquisite restaurant & bar offering.

In an information saturated digital environment IOL goes – Back to a Future – where artistic and economic restraint meant creatives paused for thought before committing pen to picture. Set on an enigmatic axis between the buzzy and frenetic Mentmore Terrace industrial Estate and the pastoral oasis of London Fields, IOL has deep roots within its eclectic community, expressed in a participatory and inclusive model which encourages memebers to take control and make the space their their own.

IOL operates from Wednesday to Sunday from 11am – 11pm, the cinema screens its eclectic programme from Wednesday through to Sunday and the record store and book shop encourages guests to casually browse, consume music on old school plastic, then relax in an exceptional dining experience.
