NOBODY ORDERED WOLVES PRESENTS: THEODORA GOES WILD [1936] +INTRO

Running Time: 94 minutes

See this classic comedy with an introduction from romance novelist Helen Cox.

Witty, feminist and charming, Theodora Goes Wild is a screwball delight that is criminally neglected.

So you’ve written a bestselling scandalous novel, the cheques are rolling in and you’re a total succès de scandale. There’s only one problem: you’re also a pillar of a very conservative community and you’d never want to upset local society by revealing your true identity.

Screwball heroine extraordinare Irene Dunne stars as Theodora, the small town wallflower who no one knows is writing steamy romance novels under a nom de plume. That is until she collides with illustrator Michael (Melvyn Douglas), who is hellbent on travelling to her sleepy berg, mixing up her life and unleashing the true Theodora. Yet that’s only half the story: Michael is menaced by a nightmare vision of the raunchy novelist when he returns to the city, as Theodora truly goes wild.

As funny, pleasing and progressive as the classics of screwball comedy – The Awful Truth, His Girl Friday and The Women – this is a underseen treat.

Helen Cox is a UK author from North Yorkshire who wound up in London after accidentally taking a left turn at Albuquerque. Over the last decade she founded and edited New Empress Magazine, has penned three non-fiction books and written for The Guardian, The Spectator and Film4.Com. Her first two romance novels were recently published by Harper Collins. When she is not writing, Helen can be found at City Lit college where she coordinates the poetry and non-fiction courses.
