SCIENCE FICTION THEATRE PRESENTS: THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN [1957]

Director: Terence Fisher

Starring: Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Hazel Court

Running Time: 83 minutes

Rating: 12

Victor Frankenstein (Peter Cushing) is a brilliant scientist willing to stop at nothing in his quest to reanimate a deceased body. After alienating his long-time friend and partner, Paul Krempe (Robert Urquhart), with his extreme methods, Frankenstein assembles a hideous creature (Christopher Lee) out of dead body parts and succeeds in bringing it to life. But the monster is not as obedient or docile as Frankenstein expected, and it runs amok, resulting in murder and mayhem…

“This was the classic that single-handedly revived traditional British Gothic and firmly placed the ‘Hammer House of Horror’ on the global gore map.”
Radio Times

“Christopher Lee is excellent as the mute monster, but this is Cushing’s film all the way, and his ground-breaking portrayal of Baron Frankenstein dominated the series in five more films.”
TV Guide

“A sterling exemplar of the best of everything that made Hammer so special.”
Antagony & Ecstasy

Before the film, Dr Kathryn Harkup, author of Making the Monster, will explore the science behind Mary Shelley’s novel, and offer a practical guide to collecting, assembling and reanimating your own Frankenstein’s monster, eighteenth century-style.

Science Fiction Theatre is a monthly film club dedicated to classic sci-fi.
