SCIENCE FICTION THEATRE PRESENTS: THE THIRTEENTH FLOOR [1999]

Director: Josef Rusnak

Starring: Craig Bierko, Gretchen Mol, Armin Mueller-Stahl

Running Time: 100 minutes

Rating: 15

Computer scientist Douglas Hall (Craig Bierko) has helped create a ground-breaking virtual world, modelled on 1930s Los Angeles. But when his mentor Hannon Fuller (Armin Mueller-Stahl), the leader of the project, is murdered, Hall becomes the prime suspect…

“By exploring consciousness and its very nature, and by using the film noir format to do so, The Thirteenth Floor demands respect, and engagement… one of those genre treasures that succeeds as a work of art, and richly rewards repeat viewings”
J. K. Muir

The film will be preceded by a talk from Murray Shanahan, Professor of Cognitive Robotics at Imperial College London and a Senior Research Scientist at DeepMind, who will consider whether consciousness really can be transferred from one medium (such as the human body) to another (such as a computer).

Science Fiction Theatre is a monthly film club dedicated to classic sci-fi.
