THE PEOPLE’S FILM CLUB PRESENTS: CAMERAPERSON [2016]

Director: Kirsten Johnson

Running Time: 102 minutes

Rating: 15

Join us on the 26th of September — it’s our final night at The Institute of Light, and things are getting suitably meta.

The People’s Film Club will be bringing you an exploration into the very nature of film. How much does authorship alter the nature of documentary film? Do documentaries encompass their own form of fiction? To what extent are all films merely the stories of the unseen cameraperson?

We will be screening Kirsten Johnson’s unique film CAMERAPERSON, which belies easy categorisation: it has been described as a ‘meta-documentary’, an ‘experimental collage-film’ and a ‘a series of episodic juxtapositions’. In essence, it unifies footage from a twenty-five year career as a world-renowned cinematographer, composed of clips spanning international war-zones, at-home family recordings, life and death, the mundane and the over-whelming.

For the first time since we started last April, this event will be a one-off fundraiser for our Film Club. We’ve got lots of exciting things planned, and want to sustain our commitment to aiding access for people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to join us. We are a small group of volunteers and would love some support to keep things growing. If you have enjoyed our events so far, we would love to see you there.

We’ve also got some sad news.. We were gutted to hear that The Institute of Light will be closing it’s doors this month. We wanted a chance to give it a good send-off, and say thanks to a spectacular team who have supported our little film club from the start. A lot of great independent spaces are disappearing off the map, and with them, the chance for people to screen films that can’t usually find a home in amongst the blockbusters. Sadly it’s too late for the Institute of Light, but it’s a reminder how important it is to show up and support independent cinemas when you can (as we know so many in our lovely club do). We will be having some beers in the bar beforehand, so come along and say hi, and enjoy our last evening under the arches!
